Sustainability Coordinator and Administrative Assistant, Community Food Co-op

Melissa started working at the Community Food Co-op, located in Bellingham, WA, in 1996 and has been the Co-op’s administrative assistant to the management team since 2008. In 2012, she added Sustainability Coordinator to her job title and started developing framework for tracking and creating sustainability initiatives within the organization. Since that time, the Co-op has published detailed annual sustainability reports, achieved LEED certification for their Cordata neighborhood store, become Energy Star® certified, and have been nationally recognized by the EPA as a national Green Power leader for the last two years. The Co-op also was awarded the National Co-op Grocer Climate Collaborative 2018 Outstanding Company award. She also mentors businesses and organizations on sustainability reporting, works with students from Western Washington University, and is currently working with the Bellingham organization Sustainable Connections to create a sustainability reporting mentor group that will be open to any regional business that is either interested in reporting or already is and would like support.
