David J. Thompson has worked for the national cooperative organizations of the United States, Britain and Japan as well as the United Nations. David specializes in cooperative capitalization and the development of nonprofit and cooperative housing. David co-chaired California’s effort to establish the National Cooperative Bank (NCB).

David is the prime force behind the Cooperative Community Fund (CCF) program of the Twin Pines Cooperative Foundation. Today over 40 US food co-ops run CCF’s. The $3.6 Million assets of TPCF/CCF is invested only in the development of cooperatives and the $75,000 a year in income is donated annually by the 40 food co-op sponsors to over 800 nonprofits in their area.

David was a Vice President of the National Cooperative Business Association and former Regional Director of National Cooperative Bank’s Western Office.  He is President of Twin Pines Cooperative Foundation and was inducted into the Cooperative Hall of Fame in 2010.

David authored “Weavers of Dreams: Founders of the Modern Cooperative Movement”, “Co-opportunity: The Birth of a Community Owned Market, and co-authored “Cooperation Works!”  He is presently writing a book about “Co-ops Against Slavery and for Civil Rights.”  He has written over 400 articles about cooperatives and has an MA in Urban Planning from the University of California at Los Angeles.

David is a principal with Luke Watkins in Neighborhood Partners, LLC.  NP, LLC has developed over 1,000 units of non profit, mutual and cooperative housing. www.npllc.org
