Sam Werbel is a proud Vermonter, born and raised with a deep appreciation for the rich agricultural heritage of the state. From early mornings volunteering at a local Jersey cow and goat dairy farm just across the river in New Hampshire, to growing up with vegetable gardens and backyard chickens, Sam’s roots run deep in the local food system.
He studied geography and anthropology at the University of Vermont and had hopes for a career that would take him overseas, but instead his journey kept him in his beloved Vermont, where he joined the Vermont Agency of Agriculture and Markets as the Executive Assistant to the Secretary of Agriculture. In this role, Sam gained invaluable insights into the workings of the state’s food system, engaging with growers, producers, and distributors, and witnessing the legislative process firsthand.
Currently, Sam serves as the Vice President of the Board of Directors for the City Market Onion River Coop in Burlington, where he helps guide the cooperative’s mission to cultivate food for the greater good. Beyond his commitment to the cooperative, Sam’s entrepreneurial spirit has sparked him to open his own fitness, nutrition, and adventure business, “ActiveVT.” Through his business, he helps others lead fit and healthy lives, enabling them to embrace any adventure or adversity that comes their way.
